IdNr vs Steuernummer: which German tax number do you need?
“German tax number” can refer to different identifiers. Before commissioning assistance, check the exact term on the request you received. Our service concerns the personal IdNr, also called Steuer-ID.

The personal IdNr / Steuer-ID
The IdNr consists of 11 digits and remains valid for life. It does not change because of a move or a change of name or marital status. If your number was assigned before but is now missing, your case concerns that existing number.
The Steuernummer is a different identifier
A Steuernummer is used by the responsible Finanzamt. It is not simply another name for your IdNr. A person can have more than one Steuernummer, and it can change when a different tax office becomes responsible.
How to clarify a request
Look for the exact label rather than guessing from the English words “tax number”. Ask the organisation requesting the number to specify which identifier is required.
- IdNr, Identifikationsnummer or Steuer-ID usually refers to the personal identification number.
- Steuernummer refers to the tax-office number.
- If the wording is unclear, describe it in your enquiry before sending documents.
Which service do we provide?
We assist with first-time personal IdNr applications and recovery of an existing IdNr for non-German clients living outside Germany. We do not accept residents of Germany or provide Steuernummer applications through this service.
The fee is €500, with no additional fees. We require a genuine passport scan and proof of address, help receive the official result, and complete the service when you obtain your IdNr. Estimated time: 2–4 months; unsuitable cases receive a full refund.
